How it works

Drop your document, choose where to put the number and in what form, then start. The tool writes the number on top of each page without touching what was already there. The preview shown afterwards is the actual file produced, not a simulation.

Why number after the fact

A thesis, an application file or a contract is often put together from several files. Each one starts again at 1, and the overall page numbering is lost. Numbering the document once it’s assembled restores a continuous sequence, which no word processor can do for you on a PDF that has already been made.

That’s also why the “start at” option exists: for when the cover page doesn’t count, or when the document follows on from another one.

What the tool respects

The number follows the page’s orientation. In a document mixing portrait and landscape pages, each one gets its number in the right place and the right way up, including when the scanner left a rotation instruction.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.

Is the content of my pages changed? No, nothing is redrawn or recompressed. The number is added on top; the rest is untouched.

Can I number only part of the document? The “skip the first page” option covers the most common case, the cover page. For finer needs, split the document, number the part you want, then put it back together.

What about password-protected PDFs? A PDF that opens without a password but forbids printing or copying is accepted as it is. If it needs a password to open, go through unlock a PDF first, if you know it: the document comes out intact.
