What it’s for
Printing an e-book. An EPUB can’t be printed: it has no pages, and its text reflows to fit the screen size. Converting it to PDF gives it fixed pages.
Reading it on a device that doesn’t know EPUB. Many work tablets, e-readers from another brand and annotation apps only open PDF.
Annotating it. Serious annotation tools work on PDF, because an annotation needs a stable position on the page.
The chapter order, the format’s real trap
It can’t be guessed from file names. An EPUB stores its pages under names like “part0012.xhtml” or “ch3_split_001.html”, and alphabetical order gives nonsense: chapter 10 before chapter 2, appendices in the middle, the title page at the end.
The true order is the one declared in the book’s manifest, and that’s the one this tool follows.
What changes when converting
The book’s formatting isn’t carried over. The text is laid out again with plain typography: headings, paragraphs, lists, quotations, images. The publisher’s chosen fonts, drop caps and decorative layouts don’t come through.
The clickable table of contents disappears. An EPUB’s internal links point to files, a notion that no longer exists once the book is flattened.
The file gets bigger, often noticeably, especially with illustrations.
Protected books won’t open
A book bought from a major bookstore often carries DRM, a digital lock. The file is encrypted and the key belongs to the seller.
Books without DRM, such as public-domain books, those supplied by an independent publisher or those you made yourself, convert without any trouble.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Do the chapters come out in the right order? Yes. The tool follows the order declared in the book’s manifest.
Can I convert a book bought from a major bookstore? Only if it has no DRM. A locked book is encrypted and its key belongs to the seller.
Is the book’s formatting kept? No. The text is laid out again with plain typography. The publisher’s fonts and decorative layouts don’t come through.
Does the PDF’s text stay selectable? Yes. Nothing is photographed; the PDF carries real characters.
