The fifty-seven other tools
Three formats, three uses
Plain text (.txt). The content, with no formatting. That’s what you need to paste into an email or a form, or to feed to another program.
Markdown (.md). The text with its heading levels marked by hash signs. Useful if you’re bringing the document into a notes app or a knowledge base.
Web page (.html). The text structured into headings and paragraphs, with the page breaks visible. It’s the most readable of the three formats if you simply want to read it through.
What a PDF doesn’t contain
A PDF doesn’t store paragraphs. It stores pieces of text with their position on the page, in the order the software wrote them, which isn’t always the reading order. Lines, paragraphs and headings don’t exist in the file: they are inferred from positions and character sizes.
This reconstruction works well on an ordinary office document. It degrades on complex layouts: two newspaper columns, a tight table, an official form.
The structure
Headings are identified from their character size. When sizes vary from line to line, several lines can be taken for headings. The system then measures the share of candidate blocks identified as headings. If that share is more than a quarter of the blocks, the heading structure is dropped and the document is returned as flat text.
Scanned PDFs have no text
A scanned page is a photograph. There’s no text in it, only pixels that draw its shape.
Those documents need character recognition (OCR). It isn’t offered here.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Is the layout kept? No: this tool gets the text, not the presentation. Columns and tables come out flat.
Why does my scanned PDF give nothing? Because it contains no text, only images of text. It would need character recognition, which this tool doesn’t do.
Are page numbers kept? Yes, if you leave the option ticked: each page is separated by a marker carrying its number.
What about password-protected PDFs? A PDF that opens without a password but forbids printing or copying is accepted as it is. If it needs a password to open, go through unlock a PDF first, if you know it: the document comes out intact.
