What the tool does and doesn’t do
All the content comes through: the text, heading levels, bulleted and numbered lists, tables with their column widths, and images at the size the document asks for.
The page geometry comes through too: size, orientation, margins, indents, alignment, justification and paragraph spacing are carried over as the document declares them.
What doesn’t come through: your fonts, columns, headers and footers, section breaks.
The resulting PDF is clean and readable. It isn’t a photograph of your Word document, and on an elaborate design the difference remains visible.
Why
Faithfully reproducing a Word layout requires Word’s rendering engine, or a complete reimplementation of it. No browser has one. Converters that give a faithful layout therefore open your document on a server, almost always an installation of LibreOffice or Word somewhere.
That means your contract, your financial statement or your cover letter goes to a machine you know nothing about, gets opened there, and stays there for as long as the operator has decided.
When this tool is the right choice
Freezing content. Sending a text the recipient won’t edit, without worrying about their version of Word.
A document without any special layout: a memo, minutes, a letter. That’s the most common case, and the result is very good.
A confidential document that mustn’t pass through a server.
When it isn’t
If your document has an elaborate design, such as a graphic résumé, a brochure or a branded report, export it to PDF from Word or LibreOffice: they have the engine it needs, and they’re on your machine.
Alphabets
The standard fonts of a PDF only know the Western Latin alphabet. When your document contains anything else, the tool writes it with more complete fonts, loaded only in that case: DejaVu Sans for Greek, Cyrillic, Central European letters, Vietnamese, Arabic, Hebrew and math symbols, Noto Sans for Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Arabic letters are joined, lines in Arabic or Hebrew run right to left, and the text stays selectable.
Emoji don’t come through, nor do the rarest Chinese characters: those characters are removed and the count is shown in the summary. An Asian font weighs about 2 MB, so it’s only loaded for a document that needs it.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Is my document’s layout kept? Partly. Page size, margins, indents, alignment and column widths are carried over. Your fonts, columns and headers are not. For complete fidelity, export to PDF from Word or LibreOffice, which are on your machine.
Does the PDF’s text stay selectable? Yes. Nothing is photographed: the PDF carries real characters, selectable and searchable.
Are LibreOffice .odt files accepted? Yes, just like .docx files. Both formats are archives containing XML, read by the same mechanism.
What about old pre-2007 .doc files? No. It’s a closed binary format, out of a browser’s reach. Open it and save it again as .docx.
