Cropping hides, it doesn’t delete
Cropping a PDF doesn’t cut the content: it moves the display area. Whatever lies outside still exists in the file and reappears if any software resets the display area to its original size.
For white margins, that doesn’t matter, and it’s the normal use of this tool. If you want to hide something for good, use redact a PDF, which truly destroys what it hides.
What it’s really for
Scans with wide margins. A document scanned at A4 size when it fitted on half a page leaves a white frame that gets in the way of reading on screen and wastes paper when printed.
Documents meant for an e-reader or a tablet. On a small screen, every centimeter of margin is text you lose.
Screenshots converted to PDF, often surrounded by white.
What the measurement shows
The tool doesn’t just announce that cropping is done: it measures the display area of the resulting file again and gives you the dimensions before and after, in points. An A4 page is 595 × 842 points; with a 10% margin on all four sides, it becomes 476 × 674, which is 36% less area.
All pages, or only some
By default, the four margins apply to the whole document. That’s what you want in almost every case, since a scan has the same margins throughout. For a single page, first extract it with extract pages, crop it, then put the document back together with merge PDFs.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Is the cut-off content deleted from the file? No. It is hidden, not deleted, and it reappears if any software resets the display area to its original size. To truly delete, use redaction.
Does the document get lighter? Hardly. The hidden content stays in the file; only the display area changes.
Can I crop a single page? Not directly. Extract the page, crop it, then put the document back together.
What about password-protected PDFs? A PDF that opens without a password but forbids printing or copying is accepted as it is. If it needs a password to open, go through unlock a PDF first, if you know it: the document comes out intact.
