How it differs from “PDF to images”
Two neighboring tools that do completely different things.
PDF to images takes a picture of each page: you get one image per page, text included, at the resolution you choose. That’s what you need to show a document to someone or insert it into a presentation.
This one pulls out the photos exactly as the document stored them, without redrawing them. You get the original file, at its original resolution, which is often much better than what the screen shows.
Why small images are skipped
A PDF contains many images that aren’t really images: list bullets, table rules, cell backgrounds, a logo repeated on every page. Pulling them out would bury the real photos under hundreds of thumbnails a few pixels wide.
The threshold can be adjusted and the number of skipped images is shown: if you were looking for a small icon, lower the slider.
What exactly you get
Photographs stored as JPEG come out as they are, byte for byte, without recompression. Images stored as raw pixels are assembled into lossless PNG.
Some images are marked “redrawn” in the summary: those are the ones the format stores in a way the browser can’t render directly. They then go through a canvas, and so through re-encoding. The summary says so.
A word about rights
Getting an image out of a document doesn’t give you the rights to it. A photograph inserted in a report belongs to its author, and technically extracting it changes nothing about that.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Do the images keep their original quality? Yes, for most: photographs stored as JPEG come out byte for byte. Those the browser can’t read directly are redrawn, and the summary says so.
Why didn’t I get all the images? Images smaller than the threshold are skipped: they are almost always bullets, rules or backgrounds. Lower the slider to include them.
Can I extract the images from a scanned document? Yes. A scan is one image per page; they will come out whole.
What about password-protected PDFs? A PDF that opens without a password but forbids printing or copying is accepted as it is. If it needs a password to open, go through unlock a PDF first, if you know it: the document comes out intact.
