How it works
Write what should appear at the top and bottom of every page, on the left, center or right. The variables in braces are replaced page by page: {page} becomes the page number, {pages} the number of pages, {date} today’s date, {file} the document name. The text is added on top of each page, without touching what it already held.
The preview shown next is the real file produced, not a simulation.
Bates numbering
In a legal or accounting file, each page gets a unique number, with a prefix and a fixed number of digits: DOC-000001, DOC-000002… That is what the {bates} variable does. To continue the numbering of a file already started, enter the first number of the new document.
What the tool respects
Margins are measured from the visible edge of the page, including on a cropped document or one with some landscape pages: every page gets its header in the right place and the right way up.
Frequently asked questions
Is my file sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Is the content of my pages changed? No, nothing is redrawn or recompressed. The header and footer are added on top, the rest is untouched.
How is it different from “number a PDF”? Numbering only adds a page number. Here, each corner of the page can carry its own text, with the date, the file name or a Bates number.
What about password-protected PDFs? A PDF that opens without a password but blocks printing or copying is accepted as it is. If it takes a password to open, go through unlock a PDF first, if you know it.
