What it’s for
Print on less paper. An eighty-page handout fits on twenty sheets at four pages per side, double-sided included. That’s the main use.
Review an overall layout. Seeing sixteen pages at once reveals imbalances you don’t notice when scrolling one page after another.
Make contact sheets from a document full of images.
Pages are embedded, not photographed
That’s what sets this tool apart from a screenshot laid out in a grid. Each page is embedded in the sheet: the text stays real text, it can be selected, searched and read by a screen reader, and the file stays light.
The sheet size
The sheet takes the size of your document’s first page. An A4 document gives A4 sheets, an A5 gives A5 sheets.
The “landscape sheet” option is useful from six pages per sheet: beyond that, a portrait sheet gives very narrow pages.
Before printing
Check that your printer doesn’t apply a second layout: many drivers offer the same option, and the two add up. In the print window, leave “1 page per sheet”.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Does the text stay selectable? Yes. Pages are embedded, not photographed: all the text stays text, selectable and searchable.
What size is the resulting sheet? The same as your document’s first page. An A4 document gives A4 sheets.
Do I also need to set my printer? No, definitely not: leave “1 page per sheet” in the print window, or the two layouts will add up.
What about password-protected PDFs? A PDF that opens without a password but forbids printing or copying is accepted as it is. If it needs a password to open, go through unlock a PDF first, if you know it: the document comes out intact.
