How it works
Your text is repeated continuously along slanted lines that cover the whole image. The preview updates with every setting, and the watermark is only written into the file when you click.
Why a tiled pattern and not a word in the middle
A single word in the middle leaves the four corners bare, and it disappears with the first crop: cutting out the center is enough to get a clean image. A pattern that covers the whole surface can’t be removed with a pair of scissors.
It’s the same choice as for the PDF watermark, and for the same reason.
Setting up a watermark that protects without spoiling
A watermark that’s too faint deters no one; one that’s too heavy makes the image unusable, including for you. Three settings help you find the balance.
Size is expressed as a percentage of the image width, never in pixels. That’s why the same setting looks the same on a thumbnail and on a photo six thousand pixels wide.
Opacity decides how discreet it is. Below 15%, the text becomes hard to read on a busy image. Above 50%, it dominates the image.
Angle isn’t decorative: slanted text is much harder to erase cleanly than horizontal text, which can be covered with a plain strip in seconds.
Color depends on the image. White reads on dark photos, black on light ones.
What a watermark does and doesn’t do
A watermark discourages reuse of an image and signals where it comes from. It doesn’t stop copying, and it doesn’t protect the image legally in itself: your authorship is what protects you; the watermark only makes it visible.
Nor does it withstand a determined eraser. Photo-editing software can get rid of a watermark on a plain area. The tiled pattern and the angle make the job long and messy, which is all you can expect of them, and it’s better to say so.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Can the watermark be removed? With photo-editing software and a lot of patience, yes, like any watermark. The tiled pattern and the angle make the job long and messy, but no watermark is indestructible, and it’s better to know that.
Can I watermark several images at once? Yes, as many as you like, with the same setting for the whole batch. The result downloads image by image or in a zip archive.
Why is the size a percentage and not in pixels? So that the same setting looks the same on a thumbnail and on a photo six thousand pixels wide. In pixels, a watermark set up on a small image would become invisible on a large one.
Is my PNG’s transparency kept? Yes. A PNG comes out as a PNG with its transparency intact. A JPG doesn’t know transparency, so it had none to lose.
