What an EPUB viewer is for
You receive an e-book and you don’t have an e-reader. You want to check what a file contains before putting it on a device. You want to find a specific passage in a book. Or you’re on a computer that isn’t yours.
In all these cases, installing reading software or creating an account somewhere is overkill. Dropping the file here is enough, and it doesn’t leave.
The chapter order, the format’s real trap
An EPUB is an archive containing web pages. The files inside have names like “part0012.xhtml” or “ch3_split_001.html”, and alphabetical order gives nonsense: chapter 10 before chapter 2, appendices in the middle, the title page at the end.
The true order is declared separately in the book’s manifest. That’s the one this viewer follows, and it’s the difference between a readable book and a jumbled one.
What the viewer doesn’t apply
The book’s style sheets. They come from a third-party file and could break everything on the page, including white text on a white background. The content is rendered with the site’s typography: headings, paragraphs, lists, quotations, images.
It’s a reader, not an e-reader app. It doesn’t replace Calibre or a dedicated app; it lets you start reading right away, on any machine.
Protected books won’t open
A book bought from a major bookstore often carries DRM, a digital lock. The file is encrypted and the key belongs to the seller: no local tool can open it, here or anywhere else. The viewer detects it and tells you, rather than failing without explaining why.
Public-domain books, those supplied by an independent publisher, those from a public digital library and those you made yourself open normally.
And then
If you want to print this book or annotate it, convert it to PDF: it will gain fixed pages, which an EPUB doesn’t have.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Are the chapters shown in the right order? Yes. The viewer follows the order declared in the book’s manifest, not the alphabetical order of the files.
Can I open a book bought from a major bookstore? Only if it has no DRM. A locked book is encrypted and its key belongs to the seller.
Is the book’s formatting respected? No, and that’s deliberate. The book’s style sheets aren’t applied: the content is rendered with the site’s typography.
Is my reading progress saved? No. Nothing is kept: closing the page erases everything.
