The conversion that asks almost no sacrifice
It’s the most favorable case of the six. WebP keeps transparency like PNG, but compresses far better: on a detailed image, the reduction commonly reaches 60 to 80%.
So you keep what made PNG worthwhile, while dividing the size by three or five.
The nuance to know about
PNG is a lossless format; WebP as it’s written here is lossy. On a photograph or a detailed image, the difference is invisible. On line art, sharp text or a diagram with flat colors, too low a quality creates a slight halo around edges.
For those images, raise the quality to 95%: the file stays much lighter than the PNG and the edges stay clean.
When to keep the PNG
If the image needs to be opened by desktop software, sent to someone or printed, keep the PNG. WebP is a web format, and its benefit stops at the browser’s border.
If the image is going on a website, the conversion is almost always the right choice.
