The reason is almost always size

A photo saved as PNG is heavy, sometimes ten times heavier than an equivalent JPG, because it keeps every pixel exactly. It’s an excellent format for a screenshot or a logo, a poor choice for a photograph.

The cases that come up: an attachment rejected because it exceeds the mail server’s limit, a form capped at 2 MB, a website that takes ten seconds to load.

What you lose, permanently

Transparency. JPG can’t store it. Transparent areas turn white. On a logo meant to sit on a colored background, the result is a white rectangle: in that case, don’t convert.

The sharpness of flat colors. JPG was designed for photos, not for sharp lines. On a screenshot, text or a diagram, it creates a halo around edges. A screenshot should stay PNG.

The compression is irreversible. Turning the JPG back into PNG won’t restore anything.

How to tell whether it’s a good idea

A simple rule: if your image contains readable text or areas of flat color, keep the PNG. If it’s a photograph, JPG is the right choice, and the size saving will be considerable.
