How it works
Drop the old version of a document, then the new one. The tool first compares their text, word by word: what was removed appears struck through in red, what was added in green, with a few words around it to place the change. It then draws every page of both versions and compares them pixel by pixel: the areas that change are boxed on the page.
The two comparisons complement each other. The text finds a figure changed in a table, which the eye easily misses. The appearance finds what the text can’t see: a replaced image, a stamp, a signature, a layout that has moved.
What the summary tells you
The number of pages that differ, the number of words added and removed, and the list of changed passages, page by page. The comparison downloads as a PDF: a summary page, then each changed page with its areas highlighted.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
What if the text simply moved to another page? The text comparison covers the whole document in one piece: a paragraph pushed to the next page isn’t counted as changed. The appearance comparison will see it, since the page no longer looks the same.
Can a scanned document be compared? Its appearance, yes. Its text, only if it has some: run both versions through OCR first to give them text.
What about password-protected PDFs? A PDF that opens without a password but blocks printing or copying is accepted as it is. If it takes a password to open, go through unlock a PDF first, if you know it.
