The fifty-seven other tools
What this tool makes
A real PDF form, the kind the standard calls an AcroForm. The document gets a list of fields, each with its page, position and type. Acrobat, Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Preview on Mac can all fill it in, with nothing to install.
The original document isn’t touched. Its text stays text, its images stay images, and the fields sit on top.
How it differs from a PDF editor
An online editor writes your text into the page and gives back a frozen document. The file produced here can be filled in, corrected, cleared and filled in again, as many times as needed, by you or by the person you send it to.
It’s the difference between filling in a paper form and making the form to fill in.
How to place the fields
Draw a box with the mouse on the preview, exactly where people will need to write. A tall box becomes a multi-line field, a short box a single line. A checkbox is placed with a small square.
Fields are numbered in the order you place them, and that is also the order the Tab key will move through them. Place them in the document’s reading order.
What this tool doesn’t do
It doesn’t guess the lines to fill in. There is no reliable way to detect the areas of a paper form, and an approximate detection would place fields in the wrong spot without saying so. Boxes are drawn by hand.
It writes no calculations or rules into the fields. A total that adds itself up requires JavaScript embedded in the file, exactly what PDF readers block today, and rightly so.
Fields are written in Helvetica. French, English, Spanish, German and Italian can be typed in without trouble, accents included. Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic and ideographs are not covered: that’s the limit of a PDF’s standard fonts, the same as on the site’s other tools.
A word about what you send
A filled-in form remains editable. If you send back a document whose answers must not change any more, print it to PDF from your reader: the output is frozen. As long as the file carries its fields, its recipient can change them.
Frequently asked questions
Is my document sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Who can fill in the file produced? Anyone, with Acrobat, Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Preview on Mac. These are real PDF form fields, not a trick: no special software is needed. Some older mobile apps display them without allowing input.
Can the fields fill themselves in or do calculations? No. A calculation in a field requires JavaScript embedded in the file, which PDF readers block today. The tool places fields to fill in, not rules.
Can I place fields on a scanned document? Yes. The fields sit on top of the page image, exactly as on an ordinary document. The tool doesn’t read the scan; you decide where to write.
What about password-protected PDFs? A PDF that opens without a password but forbids printing or copying is accepted as it is. If it needs a password to open, go through unlock a PDF first, if you know it: the document comes out intact.
