How it works
The tool opens each image and saves it again in the format you ask for. The browser can read almost every common format, including SVG, GIF and BMP, and can write JPG, PNG and WebP.
Which format to choose
JPG for photos. Very efficient compression, no transparency, a format understood absolutely everywhere.
PNG for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with sharp flat colors or transparency. No quality loss, but heavier files for a photo.
WebP when size matters. At comparable quality, it’s often 25 to 35% lighter than a JPG, and it keeps transparency. All modern browsers display it, but some old desktop software won’t open it.
What converting costs
Going from a lossless format to a lossy one, PNG to JPG for example, degrades the image permanently. The reverse, JPG to PNG, restores nothing: the file gets heavier without getting better-looking; it just freezes an image that’s already degraded.
The only case where converting again makes sense is when a specific use needs a specific format.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
What happens to transparency in JPG? It’s replaced with white; the format can’t store it. The tool warns you when your image had some.
What about animated GIFs? Only the first frame of the animation is converted. A JPG or PNG holds only one image.
Is EXIF data kept? No. Date, camera model and GPS location disappear from the converted file.
What about the HEIC photos from my iPhone? Browsers can’t open them. They first need to be exported as JPEG from the phone.
