Draw a rectangle over what you want to hide.
The fifty-seven other tools
Most redaction tools don’t actually redact
They lay a black rectangle on top of the text. The text is still underneath: it can be selected, copied, comes out intact in any PDF reader, and a simple search in the document finds it.
Here, the hidden content is destroyed. Every page where you draw a zone is redrawn, the black is painted into the image and that page no longer contains a single font: there’s nothing left to find, because there’s no text left at all.
What it costs
The redacted pages become images. Not just the hidden passages: all the text on those pages stops being selectable, searchable and readable by a screen reader, and the file grows a little. The other pages come out intact, text included. Check that they hold nothing else to hide, or tick “Also redraw the pages without a zone” to turn the whole document into an image.
That’s the price of real hiding, and there’s no middle ground: either the text is there and can be recovered, or it’s gone. If you only want to cut off white margins, crop a PDF is what you need, but note that cropping hides without deleting.
Three things to check before sending a redacted document
The metadata. The author’s name, the software and the dates stay in the file even after the content is redacted. This tool clears them, but if you go another route, remember to remove the metadata.
The file name. “contract-smith-confidential.pdf” undoes all the work. Rename it.
Proofread the resulting document. Open it, try selecting the hidden text, search for the word you wanted to hide.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files sent anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Is the hidden text really destroyed? Yes. Every page where you draw a zone is redrawn as an image and the black is painted into it: it no longer contains any font, so no text left to recover. The tool measures it on the resulting file.
Does the rest of the document stay selectable? Yes. Only the pages where you draw a zone become images, the others come out intact. A checkbox lets you redraw everything if you prefer.
Is the metadata cleared too? Yes. The resulting document no longer carries an author, software or title.
What about password-protected PDFs? A PDF that opens without a password but forbids printing or copying is accepted as it is. If it needs a password to open, go through unlock a PDF first, if you know it: the document comes out intact.
