How it works
The code draws itself as you type. Everything is computed by your browser, following the ISO 18004 standard: nothing is requested from a server, neither to make the image nor to store it.
You get the result as PNG, handy for an email or a presentation, or as SVG, a vector image that stays sharp at any print size.
Which correction level to choose
A QR code contains enough to be read even when damaged. The higher the level, the more it tolerates stains, folds and logos placed on top, but the denser the code becomes for the same content.
Medium suits almost every use on screen or on paper. Quartile or High make sense for an outdoor poster, a label that will get dirty, or a code you plan to put a logo on.
A few useful formats
A QR code can contain more than an address. For a Wi-Fi network, write WIFI:T:WPA;S:NomDuReseau;P:MotDePasse;;. For a number to call, tel:+33600000000. For an email, mailto:nom@exemple.fr. For a ready-to-send text message, sms:+33600000000.
Frequently asked questions
Does what I encode go anywhere? No. You can check for yourself in thirty seconds: here is how.
Does the QR code expire? Never. It depends on no service; it contains your content directly.
Is there a watermark or a limit? Neither. No account, no quota, no forced logo.
Can I change the colors and add my logo? Yes, under “Customize”. But the tool refuses settings that would make the code unreadable, and tells you which one: a contrast below 4:1, a code lighter than its background, or a logo too big for the chosen correction level. A QR code that won’t scan doesn’t look any different on screen; you find out after printing.
What logo size is accepted? It depends on the error correction, since the logo erases the modules it covers. None at “Low”, up to 18% of the side at “Medium”, 25% at “Quartile”, 30% at “High”. The tool only uses half the available correction, the other half being kept for real damage: a fold, a stain, a reflection.
What’s the maximum length? Close to 3,000 characters without accents at the lowest correction level, 1,273 at the highest: a full business card fits easily. Beyond that, the tool tells you and gives you the maximum, rather than producing an unreadable code. The longer the text, the denser the code: the tool then tells you the print size to stick to.
